Yang’s research interests include modern Buddhism(s), urban redevelopment, and local governance in southwestern China. His previous works investigate temple-centered redevelopment in Chengdu.

His current research at the GCLC team examines the construction of cross-border industrial zones between Baoshan, Yunnan, and Mandalay, Myanmar. Combining ethnographic methods and textual analysis, Yang’s research turns to domestic grassroot leaders and their endeavors at the local level in proactively engaging the BRI “from below”.
